Our legacy · Since 1987

Built by two people, for a lakh and a half women

Prof. Dr. M. Karunanithi built the colleges and the hospitals. Mrs. Krishnaveni Karunanithi made sure everyone in them was well fed and safe. Between them, a pharmacy college on farmland became twenty-seven institutions for the daughters of rural Tamil Nadu.

How they built it

He built the colleges. She made sure everyone in them was fed and safe.

The work was shared from the start. The Chairman took on the institutions and the hospitals beside them. The Managing Director took on the food and its quality, and the safety of the students in the colleges and the hostels.

What they have built, in four parts

For women’s education first, and then for everyone the institutions touch: patients, staff, workers and the villages around them.

Education

Colleges built where rural women already live, so a daughter can study without leaving home.

  • Twenty-seven institutions under three trusts, at Tiruchengode, Sankagiri and Morepalayam, from a matriculation school to a medical college.
  • Most of the women taught here are the first in their family to hold a degree.
  • About ₹2 crore a year in scholarships, and ₹17 crore so far for students who did well but could not meet the fee.
  • Free education for destitute children.
  • A free bus for every student, from eight districts and as far as a hundred kilometres out.

56,000patients a year treated free

02Led by the Chairman

Health

Specialist care brought to the villages, so that no one has to travel to a city for it, or pay for what they cannot afford.

  • An eye department in 2003 that treats about 50,000 patients a year at no charge, cataract surgery included.
  • The 300-bed Vivekanandha Medical Care Hospital, with a cath lab and open heart surgery.
  • A 1,000-bed teaching hospital in 2021, the first private medical college in Namakkal district.
  • About 6,000 patients a year treated free at the hospital, at a cost of some ₹75 lakh.
  • The district's only ICMR-approved private COVID-19 testing centre, and COVID-19 care through the pandemic.

  • Free food every day for the roughly 1,000 drivers, cleaners and maintenance workers.
  • Purified drinking water on every campus.
  • Safety in the colleges and the hostels: CCTV, LED displays and security staff, day and night.
  • Food for the villages around the campuses during the Thane (2011) and Khaja (2018) cyclones and through COVID-19.

04The work of both

The people around them

The staff, the workers and the villages that grew up around the institutions are looked after as part of the same family.

  • About 3,000 teaching and non-teaching staff across the campuses.
  • Free boarding and lodging for faculty and staff in the hostels.
  • Relief during the Thane (2011) and Khaja (2018) cyclones, and food and medical aid through COVID-19.
  • Four temples built, and regular support for temple renovation across four districts.

1992

A pharmacy collegeon farmland

Dr. M. Karunanithi was born on 20 November 1952 into a farming family at Elayampalayam, a hamlet near Tiruchengode. He went to the local school, then to Madurai Medical College to study pharmacy, and spent his first five working years as a chemist at a private medical company in Namakkal.

Growing up in a village, he saw how little schooling the women around him were given, and how much of what happened to them followed from that. He decided the answer was to educate them. Raising the money took years. He started a cattle feed manufacturing unit in his hamlet and made it work, and that paid for the first college.

Swamy Vivekanandha College of Pharmacy opened in 1992 under the Angammal Educational Trust, named after the philosopher who had argued for educating women. Colleges in arts and science, engineering, education, pharmacy, nursing, physiotherapy, allied health, dentistry and medicine followed. A school, Vivekanandha Vidhya Bhavan, was added when local families asked for one; it now continues as Vidyaa Vikas Matric Higher Secondary School at Morepalayam.

Swamy Vivekanandha College of Pharmacy was the first, in 1992. There are now 27 institutions and about 3,000 people working in them.

Alongside the trusts he founded two businesses, Allwin Laboratories and MKG Foods and Feeds.
